Sen. Sessions Comments on the Confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice
Thursday, September 29, 2005
Statement of Sen. Jeff Sessions on the Senate confirmation of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States:
“Today’s 78 - 22 Senate confirmation vote of John Roberts as Chief Justice of the United States represents a victory for the rule of law, a victory for the classical and proper role of a judge in our legal system. John Roberts’s confirmation was a defeat for the politicization of the courts and the notion that a judge should be an advocate for this or that view. I don’t believe a judge should advocate my political views, and I don’t think the President believes that a judge should promote his political views. To cite the apt metaphor that John Roberts used during his confirmation hearings, a judge should be a neutral umpire.”
